│ Description │
└───────────────────┘
alaSAVER is the screensaver unit designed for the DOS menuing
system, alaCARTE.
alaSAVER clears the screen, then moves an "alaCARTE" banner around
within the perimeters of the display area. When the banner enters
the central part of the screen, a colorful animated display is
provided, which moves the "alaCARTE" title into position using a
variety of methods, and displays the current date and time.
alaSAVER also provides a clock which chimes on the hour, quarter-,
half- and three-quarter-hour times. The clock plays the "Big Ben"
sequence on the hour, then chimes out the hour. It plays one chime
at the quarter-, half- and three-quarter-hour times.
These clock events also provide a special, colorful full-screen
display in concert with the chimes.
The alaSAVER screensaver works with XT's on up, color or mono,
and is not a TSR or "pop-up" program ... and therefore will not
deprive other applications of memory space.
┌───────────────────────┐
│ HOW TO RUN alaSAVER │
└───────────────────────┘
alaSAVER is compiled as an executable (.EXE), and can therefore be
run simply by switching to the directory where the alasaver.exe file
located, and entering "alasaver". The program may therefore be
called from any batch file or menuing system.
To use the program as a manual screen blanker, copy "0.bat" and
"alasaver.exe" to your root directory. Pressing "0" and <Enter>
at the C:\> prompt will then pop up the screen saver. Touching
any key thereafter will remove it and return you to the C:\> prompt.
To use the simple batch file menu included with alaSAVER, also copy
"1.bat" and "1.ans" to your root directory. Again, pressing "0" and
<Enter> at the C:\> prompt will pop up the screen saver. However,
when alaSAVER is retired by touching any key, the batch file menu
will pop up, giving you a list of ten program items to choose from.
The last three items on the menu are set up for you. You can use
the first seven items for whatever programs you wish to add to the
menu. Instructions for adding program items are included as "rem"
lines within "1.bat". Simply open the file using the DOS Editor
and follow the instructions for changing "1.bat" and "1.ans".

│ USING THE PROGRAM WITH MICROSOFT WINDOWS │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Since alaSAVER is not a Windows .SCR file, it cannot be added to
the list of screensaver in your Windows directory, and called by
the Desktop.
You can add the alaSAVER icon to one of your program groups however,
and call it with a mouse-click. If you're working in an application
and wish to step away from your keyboard for a moment, for example,
just touch Alt+Tab to pop up the Program Manager, then click on the
alaSAVER icon. When you return to your work, just touch Alt+Tab
again to return to your work.
Switching with the Alt+Tab combination will not stop alaSAVER, and
you may switch back and forth at will using these keys. To stop
alaSAVER, just touch any key while it is running as the active
application.
To install alaSAVER in Windows, click on the program group where
you want to include the alaSAVER icon, then:
1. Click on Program Manager's "File" menu item.
2. In the drop-down box, click on "New".
3. In the "New Program Object" box, click on "Program Item",
then click the "ok" button.
4. In the "Program Item Properties" box ...
a. enter "alaSAVER" in the "Description:" box
b. click inside the "Command Line:" box, click on
the "Browse" button, then locate the directory
containing the "alasaver.exe" file, and click on
that filename, then click "ok".
c. click on the "Change Icon ..." button, click on
"ok" to clear the "no icons" notice, click on
the "Browse" button, then locate the directory
containing the "alasaver.ico" file, and click on
that filename, then click "ok".
d. click on "ok" to close "Program Item Properties"
To easily get to alaSAVER when working in Windows, simply click on
the alaSAVER icon. Program Manager will then run the DOS program
for you. When done, exiting from alaSAVER will return you to
the Program Manager.

│ Technical Support │
└───────────────────────┘
alaSAVER is provided "just for the fun of it". As a screen saver,
its not elaborate, but it is simple, interesting and non-obtrusive.
The clock chimes are actually rather handy, and may fondly remind
you of your grandma's old mantle clock.
The simple batch file menu might well serve your purposes, but is
really only intended as an example of how to call the screen saver
on a time-out basis from a batch file. The alaCARTE menuing system
is designed especially for "family" use, is easy to set up, use,
and revise ... even for the kids.
If you cannot get the program to run properly, the following are
some things you could try to solve the problem.
First make sure that you have installed all the files in the proper
directory, and that you are calling the program using the correct
path and filename.
If all else fails, help is available from Warner Instruments.
You may call us weekdays between 8:00AM and 5:00PM (Eastern
Standard Time). Our FAX and Customer Support Bulletin Board are
